Department of Materials Science (DCM)

Department of Materials Science

The Department of Materials Science (DCM), Faculty of Science and Technology, New University of Lisbon (FCT-UNL) was the first to be created nationally in 1976 at the initiative of its first president, Prof. Leopoldo Guimarães. The initial aim was to create university extension courses in the field of materials leading to the creation of a root degree covering a wide range of scientific areas, including metallurgy, semiconductor materials, polymeric materials and mesomorph, ceramic materials and crystals, crystal chemistry and quality control.

Since then the Department of Materials Science has grown and diversified its activities, mainly due to the efforts of its faculty and staff, embodied in a large number of projects (academic and industrial) funded by National, European and International authorities. This allowed its modern adaptation to new technologies, providing  for such a unique laboratory infrastructure in Portugal, for teaching and research, internationally recognized and that has allowed to form Material Science Engineers of high scientific quality , able to respond to current society's demands.

Department of Conservation and Restoration (DCR)

Department of Conservation and Restoration

The Department of Conservation and Restoration of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa has the mission of teaching and research thus contributing  to a better conservation and heritage enjoyment, especially the valuable and almost ancient Portuguese heritage in urgent need to preserve for future generations.

Laboratories and properly equipped workshops allow quality research in conservation science and its applications to restoration. A network of national and international collaborations enables the development of exciting projects, of recognized quality, and creates unique opportunities for master stages and career opportunities.

DCR believes that the passion for research and enthusiasm for heritage conservation and restoration should be shared with their students. So in the next academic year, from the 2nd Semester onwards , students will be asked to choose a laboratory / workshop, join their team to participate in the activities of day-to-day as well as in the ongoing innovative projects. They will formulate new ideas, knowing how to acquire and process new data, challenge / question the boundaries of common sense, discover things never before thought and apply them to better conserve, restore and enjoy the works of art!

Department of Physics (DF)

Department of Physics

The Physics Department (DF) is a graduate teaching unit and a post-graduate degree unit (1st, 2nd and 3rd study cycles) and a basic and applied research unit in the fields of Physics, Physics Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. It is still focused on scientific and technological development, services provision and scientific disclosure. Besides being responsible for the Integrated Masters in Physics Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, as well for the doctoral programs in the same areas in Physics  and for  the doctoral programs "NOVA Instrumentation for Health - NOVA 4H" and "Radiation Biology and Biophysics - Rabbit," the DF ensures the teaching of courses of basic physics to all FCT-NOVA courses.

This Department started with a small existing nucleus since FCT-NOVA’s the birth, managed by Prof. Manuel Laranjeira (then Rector of NOVA), the Department of Physics was formally recognized in 1986 and maintained since then a faculty of about 30 people. Its activities in Physics and Physics Engineering were extended in 2000 to include the Biomedical Engineering.

The scientific DF activity takes place mainly in two Research Units, the LIBPhys-UNL and the CEFITEC. The research covers various areas such as nanophysics and energy, atomic and molecular physics, nuclear physics and plasma, physical interfaces, lasers and optoelectronics, sensors, cryogenics, analytical techniques applied to health and cultural heritage, medical instrumentation and medical imaging.

Department of Mathematics (DM)

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is responsible for one undergraduate course (1st cycle of study) two graduate courses (2nd cycle of study) which award a master’s degree, two postgraduate courses (3rd cycle of study) which award a doctorate degree, a one year post-graduate course and other short courses. The department academic staff also cooperates in other courses of all qualification levels taught at FCT NOVA.

The scientific activity of the majority of the faculty members of the Department of Mathematics is developed at the Center for Mathematics and its Applications (CMA). Its research work covers four major areas: Algebra, Differential equations and Numerical Analysis; Operational Research, Statistics and Risk Management. CMA is integrated into the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon and is financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology. In addition to the researchers of the Department of Mathematics, this center has the collaboration of many researchers belonging to several Portuguese and foreign universities. In the last evaluation that have been done by the Foundation for Science and Technology, CMA has obtained the classification of Very Good. The other members of this Department develop its scientific activity integrated in other research centers or autonomously.
