PhD in History, Philosophy and Heritage of Science and Technology

Started in 2008/2009: The minimum number of credits to obtain the grade is 180 (3 years).

Objectives

The objectives of the PhD Programme in History, Philosophy and Heritage of Science and Technology are:

  1. To foster a culture of science and technology, that aims to understand the historical importance and influence of science and technology in European society;
  2. To understand and contextualize the development of  technological innovation in Portuguese society;
  3. To identify and contextualize the history of scientific and technological Portuguese heritage;
  4. To evaluate and disseminate knowledge that will ensure the conservation, of the scientific and technological heritage.

Students will join the Interuniversitary Centre for History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (CIUHCT), a recognized research unit at the national and international levels.

Admission rules:

  1. Holders of a 2nd cycle master's degree or equivalent, concluded in a legally recognized Portuguese or foreign higher education institution.

  2. Bachelor's degree holders and holders of a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council;

  3. Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the NOVA School of Science and Technology.

About the Department of Applied Social Sciences

The Applied Social Sciences Department (DCSA) guarantees, at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, the teaching and the research in areas outside the basic sciences and engineering, giving thus our students a structured training in the field of applied social sciences, what passes by having competency in the fields of expression and communication, the relationship between science / technology / society (history, philosophy and contemporary thought) ethics, work organization and economy, management and entrepreneurship.
