NOVA University with a prominent position in international rankings

As widely reported in the national press, the New University of Lisbon was the only University of Portugal highlighted the "QS Top 50 Under 50 in 2014", an international ranking of the top 50 young universities in the world, having been placed at the 45th position. This ranking is based on the analysis of over 3,000 universities around the world and of various indicators such as: academic reputation, reputation among employers, number of citations, teacher-student ratio and the internationalization of faculty and students. 

At the "QS World University Rankings" and analysing 2014 edition results, it can be seen that among the several evaluated criteria, NOVA leads at national level regarding the reputation of employers, the teacher-student  and international teachers ratio. The results show that the work of the NOVA University of Lisbon - while university with a teaching excellence - is able to ensure high levels of professional success to its students.

The NOVA University of Lisbon was also considered one of the top 100 universities with less than 50 years in world rankings compiled by the "Times Higher Education". The ranking is now in its 3rd edition, and NOVA integrates the final selection since the 1st edition.

The NOVA University, leading in Portugal, is also featured in the "CWTS Leiden Ranking" the list that measures the performance, quality and impact of the scientific production of the 750 world's leading universities.

In the first edition of the ranking (2011/2012) NOVA occupied the 4th position at national level and in the latest edition it occupies the 2nd position. In terms of European level, NOVA occupies the 189th position and at the world scale the 404th position. This ranking measures the scientific performance of 750 universities worldwide, using a set of bibliometric indicators in order to measure the impact of scientific publications of an institution.

Another important ranking in which NOVA is present is the "U-Multirank" global ranking compiled and funded by the European Commission. The NOVA University received the top marks ('A') in various research indicators, including the number of research publications, external research income, the post-doc number of positions and their percentage of interdisciplinary publications. The scientific impact of the university is also known for dozens of 'B' classifications regarding its reference rate. Something similar occurs respecting NOVA knowledge transfer activities. The industry and business links are reflected in the high income sources originating from private sources and the 'A' rating assigned to the number of spin-off businesses. Meanwhile, many of NOVA publications are cited in patent application reinforcing its strong commitment to applied research.

The U-Multirank currently includes data from over 1200 higher education institutions, from 85 different countries, and develops an innovative and multidimensional approach through a comparative analysis tool of the performance of institutions on 31 indicators organized into five distinct groups: teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international orientation and regional involvement.

NOVA was classified with the maximum score (category A - Very Good) in 13 of the 31 used assessment indicators and obtained the highest indicators rating in the following itens:

Research – Research publications (absolute numbers); Research publications (size-normalised); External research income; Interdisciplinary publications; Post-doc positions

Knowledge Transfer – Income from private sources; Spin-offs; Publications cited in patents

International Orientation – Student mobility; International academic staff; International joint publications

Regional Engagement – Master graduates working in the region; Regional joint publications
