IBM Scientific Award distinguishes FCT NOVA researcher

The jury of the IBM Scientific Prize 2015, on its 21st May meeting, decided to award this prize to the researcher Matthias Knorr, considering the unique approach of his work, scientifically well-founded and the impact on the treatment of complex ontological systems, like the legal ones, characterized by incomplete or inaccurate information.

"It is an honor for me to receive the IBM Award and to contribute in this way to the dissemination of the research work we develop, increasing its impact," stressed Matthias Knorr, this year’s prize winner.

"Reasoning combining Non-monotonic and Ontologies Rules for the Semantic Web" is the title of the winning work. The research of Matthias Knorr aims to take another step forward in the field of artificial intelligence, more specifically in Knowledge and Reasoning Representation (RCR), and in Semantic Web, through the intelligent use of structured information distributed by Web, enabling systems with a vast knowledge about the world.

"Currently, the Web provides vast amounts of information and knowledge with different ways of structuring and complexity from knowledge organized into hierarchies to knowledge that  allows to represent and reason about exceptions," said the award-winning, adding, "Much of this knowledge is represented in standardized languages in order to facilitate their creation and reuse across applications, enterprises and community. These standardized languages ​​have been successfully exploited for example in product development, aircraft design, in health and biology, and even by the IBM Watson when the victory on Jeopardy occured. "

As a result, the project seeks to contribute to advance the state of the art, developing the theory, methods, and even "a tool for reasoning about the integration of several very efficiently knowledge bases, something that is crucial taking into account the large volumes of information and knowledge available in our days."
