Lecture by Herro Mustafa, Minister Counselor of the US Embassy in Lisbon

On June 5th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the Auditorium of the FCT NOVA Library, will take place a lecture under the subject "Herro Mustafa - Pursuing the American Dream". This talk will be an opportunity to listen to the life experience of Herro Mustafa, currently Minister Counselor and Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Lisbon, from Iraq and with a remarkable career as an American diplomat, with a life history Inspiring because she herself was a Kurdish Muslim refugee. The presentation of the session will be in charge of the Director of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Professor Doctor Fernando Santana.  

Herro Mustafa, a native of Iraq, has a remarkable career as an American diplomat and an inspirational life story because she herself was a Kurdish Muslim refugee who came from Iraq to the United States with her family in search of an opportunity to live without fear of persecution of the regime of Saddam Hussein, but never forgetting his homeland, trying to preserve, at home, the maintenance of the Kurdish traditions.  

She began her duties as Counselor of the American Embassy in Lisbon in July 2016. Before coming to Portugal, she was Political Adviser at the US Embassy in New Delhi, India. From 2009 to 2011, she served as an advisor to Vice President Joe Biden for Middle East, South and Central Asia affairs. In her role as diplomat, Herro served as deputy director of the Afghanistan Service, Acting Chief of Staff of Under Secretary for Political Affairs William Burns and Middle East advisor to former Under Secretary Nicholas Burns, at which point he was closely involved in the P5 + 1 negotiations , about Iran. Herro Mustafa served as director of services in Iran, Israel-Palestine and Jordan, the National Security Council in 2005-2006 and services in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2004-2005. She was the US Civil Defense Coordinator in Mosul, Iraq, consul in Beirut, Lebanon and worked in the Political Section of the US Embassy in Athens, Greece. He grew up in Minot, North Dakota and speaks Kurdish, Arabic, Farsi, Greek, Hindi and Portuguese.  He holds a bachelor's degree from the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and a Master's from Princeton University - Biographical note.
