MARE Researcher in FameLab's national final

Mónica Ribau, researcher at FCT NOVA’s MARE Research Center (Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences), was selected for the national final of the international science communication competition FameLab and participated in the national final of this Competition, last 14 May at the Pavilion of Knowledge - Centro Ciência Viva-Parque das Nações, in Lisbon. The winner will represent Portugal in the international finals that will take place in the UK in June 2017.

In her work, Monica Ribau deconstructs the mechanism of Climate Change and starts of a worldwide event - the election of Donald Trump - to understand the concept of social risk perception and the complexity that risk studies carry. Her work responds to the question "how can a politician put in question a phenomenon that generates worldwide consensus among the community of scientists ... and be elected?" This question needs an explanation because climate change is a phenomenon whose consequences create risks. Risks that are evaluated and so they can persuade behavior change . These behaviors, in turn, will influence the risk studies themselves.
