The Master's Degree in Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering (MEMN) is a multidisciplinary programme offering training in three main areas: Electronics, Biotechnology and Energy, combining engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, management and entrepreneurship.

Over two years, the MEMN prepares students for the forefront of innovation, exploring applied science and disruptive technologies such as transparent and/or flexible (opto)electronics, (nano)biosensors, solar cells and photonics, in clean rooms and various laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for nano/micro-scale manufacturing and advanced characterisation of materials and devices.

With the support of centres of research excellence and various partnerships with institutions and companies around the world, graduates of the Master's in Micro and Nanotechnologies are qualified for careers in cutting-edge sectors with high employability, such as (micro/nano)electronics, automation, mobility, aerospace, health and sustainable energy.

Taught in Portuguese and English, the programme attracts students of various nationalities who wish to transform their careers.

"Impulso Mestre 2026" Scholarship

These scholarships, worth 450 euros, are available to all students who:
a) Are applying, for the first time to the first year of a Master’s degree at NOVA FCT;
b) Have completed their Bachelor’s degree with a final grade equal to or higher than 15 (out of 20);
c) Have completed their Bachelor’s degree at a higher education institution in Portugal or in another Member State of the European Union.

The results will be announced in November 2026.

  • Possibility of financial support through two types of scholarships available:
    • ‘Impulso Mestre’ scholarships (€450) awarded to students enrolled for the first time in the master's programme with an average grade of 15/20 or higher in their bachelor's degree.
    • Merit Scholarships (€1,250) awarded annually, sponsored by companies and research laboratories, to students with the highest entry grade in the master's programme or with the highest average grade from the previous year.

Program

The Master's Degree in Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering is structured over two years, with a curriculum that emphasizes the practical component, including theoretical-practical sessions and laboratory work, supported by the excellence in research developed by the teaching staff integrated in the CENIMAT and CEMOP centres associated with the Department of Materials Science (DCM). These R&D centres are internationally recognised as leaders in various technological areas such as: Transparent, Flexible and Sustainable Electronics; Nanotechnologies applied to Medicine; Photonics for Photovoltaics; Nanomaterials and Smart Devices; among others.

The main objective is to train professionals to work in cutting-edge areas in the field of Materials Science and Micro/Nanotechnologies and their applications, with a focus on the fields of Electronics, Biotechnology and Energy, providing basic knowledge and unique experimental skills for the understanding and manipulation of materials and devices at the nano and microscopic scales, as well as cross-cutting skills in Entrepreneurship and Management for Innovation.

Curriculum

For whom

  • Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering, Materials Engineering, Physics Engineering or Electrical Engineering. Candidates with similar backgrounds will be evaluated based on their CV and professional experience.
  • Holders of a foreign higher education degree awarded following a 1st cycle of studies organised in those areas, in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process;
  • Holders of a foreign higher education degree in those areas, which is recognised as satisfying the objectives of the bachelor's degree by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognised as attesting to the ability to complete this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology, upon proposal by the Course Committee of the cycle of studies.

The Department of Materials Science (DCM) of NOVA FCT has unique laboratory infrastructures in Portugal, internationally recognized, which, together with the excellent teaching for which we strive, have allowed us to train Materials Engineers with high scientific and technical quality.
