Objectives

The Undergraduate program in Materials Engineering (LeMat) aims at the formation of a scientific-technological base in the field of Materials Engineering, with a view to the pursuit of studies; mobility between training courses offered at the NOVA School of Science and Technology and other schools; employability in services that do not require specific 2nd cycle skills.

LEMat, like all courses at NOVA School of Science and Technology, follows a new pedagogical approach known as “FCT Curricular Profile” . Essentially, the “FCT Curricular Profile” reinforces the technical-scientific training provided with complementary skills (soft-skills) that provide the student with the tools that will influence his academic performance and, in the future, his professional performance as a graduate. Although technical skills are important, in the current context, and even in terms of employability, complementary skills play a leading role.

The BSc. course on Materials Engineering  offers the students the opportunity to learn the important mutual influences involving materials’ Structure, Properties, Processing and Applications.

By the end of course, the student should:

I. Thoroughly understand the links between the structure and the properties of the different classes of materials
II. Know the most relevant materials characterization techniques
III. Adequately use the relevant characterization techniques to solve concrete industrial problems
IV. Be familiar with the most relevant materials processing technologies
IV. Know and use within its proper context the relevant mathematical, physical, chemical or informatics language and concepts indispensable to acquire technical competences
V. Communicate efficiently within an academic and professional context
VI. Be familiar with corporate organizational templates

First and foremost, the Undergraduate Course in Materials Engineering is the ideal preparation for more advanced studies in any engineering specialty, particularly in Materials Engineering.

Training in Materials Engineering was launched at the NOVA School of Science and Technology in 1981. Since then, the demand for Material Engineers has increased significantly, as a reflex of a highly technological training that enables the Materials Engineering graduates to successfully exercise a profession.

About the Department of Materials Science

The Department of Materials Science (DCM), NOVA School of Science and Technology, was the first to be created nationally in 1976 at the initiative of its first president, Prof. Leopoldo Guimarães. The initial aim was to create university extension courses in the field of materials leading to the creation of a root degree covering a wide range of scientific areas, including metallurgy, semiconductor materials, polymeric materials and mesomorph, ceramic materials and crystals, crystal chemistry and quality control.

Since then the Department of Materials Science has grown and diversified its activities, mainly due to the efforts of its faculty and staff, embodied in a large number of projects (academic and industrial) funded by National, European and International authorities. This allowed its modern adaptation to new technologies, providing  for such a unique laboratory infrastructure in Portugal, for teaching and research, internationally recognized and that has allowed to form Material Science Engineers of high scientific quality , able to respond to current society's demands.
