Elvira Fortunato, professor and researcher at NOVA FCT, has been recognized for the second consecutive year by Forbes Portugal as one of the 50 most powerful women in business in 2025.
“This recognition is both an incentive and a responsibility. It is not only personal, but also a reflection of the quality of science and innovation produced in Portugal, which must be regarded as a public good and a strategic asset for the country’s development,” says Elvira Fortunato.
Internationally renowned for her pioneering work in nanotechnology and transparent electronics, Elvira Fortunato has authored over 900 scientific articles and has received numerous national and international awards. The researcher, who has also served as Portugal’s Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, is once again highlighted for her academic relevance and impact on Portuguese society.
The Forbes Portugal ranking analyzed more than 150 outstanding female profiles in Portugal and abroad, taking into account criteria such as decision-making power, influence, scope of projects, and entrepreneurship. This year, the scientist joins the list alongside business leaders, multinational executives, and leading entrepreneurs.
The recognition by Forbes Portugal reinforces her position as a prominent figure in science and leadership in Portugal, at a time when valuing competence, innovation, and strategic vision are key factors for the future of higher education.
