NOVA FCT has just been awarded the 2025 Eco-Schools Green Flag, a distinction that recognizes the commitment of the community to promoting sustainability throughout the 2024/2025 academic year.
The award is promoted by Eco-Schools, an international program of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), coordinated in Portugal by the Associação Bandeira Azul de Ambiente e Educação (ABAAE). Its aim is to support activities that improve schools’ environmental performance, encourage behavior change, and recognize the work carried out by the educational community.
At NOVA FCT, participation is coordinated by the Division of Sustainability and Green Spaces (DSEV). Key initiatives include an Environmental Audit, which involved a survey of students to identify strengths and areas for improvement in sustainability on Campus. Based on this initial assessment, an Action Plan was developed addressing the program’s mandatory themes — water, waste, and energy — as well as complementary themes such as outdoor spaces, biodiversity, the sea, citizenship, forests, and climate action, integrating actions and events promoted by the community, particularly by students.
Within the program, the NOVA FCT Eco-Code was also created, serving as the School’s charter of sustainability principles and reflecting the collective commitment to continuous improvement. The document is available for consultation by the academic community here ( in Portuguese only).
Higher Education institutions that achieve the Green Flag for three consecutive years can apply for the FEE EcoCampus Award, promoting continuous improvement in campus environmental management and encouraging sustainable behaviors among the academic and local community.
With this achievement, NOVA FCT reinforces its commitment to sustainability and is already looking ahead to its next challenge: applying for the FEE EcoCampus Award.
