Lisbon hosted, from October 17 to 19, another edition of the Tec2Med Summit, a pioneering technological ideation platform at the convergence of Engineering, Medicine, and One Health. Created by NOVA FCT students, the project has become an international reference point, fostering collaborations among biomedical engineers, clinicians, and scientists from multiple fields, generations, and countries.
Born at NOVA School of Science and Technology, the Tec2Med Summit reflects the institution’s innovative DNA, promoting applied research and the transfer of scientific knowledge to society. Since 2019, it has involved over 1,000 participants and supported more than 20 business, research, and educational projects. This 5th European edition also marked its global debut, with the first international conference in São Paulo, supported by partnerships with major actors in the health sector.
During the event, the creation of the International Center for Innovation in Medicine and Biomedical Engineering (Tec2Med CIIMEB) was announced. This center is the result of a partnership with the Hospital de Amor de Barretos (Brazil) and the Harena Innovation incubator, with collaboration from NOVA FCT, ESSCVP - CROSS ID, Algarve Evolution, and other academic and business partners. Located in the Algarve, the new technology unit aims to revolutionize biomedical engineering in Portugal and reduce regional disparities in technological innovation applied to health.
Rooted in a culture of entrepreneurship and collaboration, Tec2Med — firmly anchored in NOVA FCT — has already promoted projects in Responsible AI, Biomedical Sensors, Wearables, and Digital Health. Solutions developed include virtual reality applications for surgery, clinical management software, and AI-based diagnostic algorithms.
"Tec2Med is a purpose-driven brand. We were created to collaborate, complement, and unite. Our mission has faced many challenges over the years, but the scale of our success with so few resources proves the excellence of the values we follow and the importance of our mission. We must support each other, always with a global perspective. We remain convinced of the importance of our contribution to training future health innovators worldwide and, above all, to creating ideas that save lives. Biomedical engineering needs Tec2Med, and we are here to make it what it deserves, especially in Portugal," says Miguel Barbosa, Master in Biomedical Engineering from NOVA FCT, co-founder and president of the brand.
With the continued contribution of students, alumni, and researchers from NOVA FCT, Tec2Med continues to establish itself as a movement of applied science with social impact, putting into practice the values of collaboration, innovation, and public service that define the Faculty’s mission.
