Bárbara Capelo

Bárbara Capelo, a student in the Master’s in Biomedical Engineering at NOVA FCT, was awarded the Best Scientific Paper Award for her work “Evaluating Coreset Selection with Coverage and Density: A Data Quality Perspective”.

The paper, presented at the 24th EPIA Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2025, examines how metrics traditionally used for evaluating synthetic data can help assess the quality of coresets — small, highly informative subsets of large datasets used to train Artificial Intelligence models more efficiently. The research provides new perspectives on what defines a “good” subset of data beyond mere model performance, contributing to more efficient and interpretable AI systems.

The work was carried out under the supervision of Duarte Folgado and Hugo Gamboa, professors in the Department of Physics at NOVA FCT, and involved collaboration with researchers from Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS, where Bárbara Capelo conducted her master’s thesis project.

This recognition highlights not only the talent and dedication of the student but also the key role of NOVA FCT and its faculty in mentoring and supporting young researchers, fostering the academic and scientific success of its students.
