Rodrigo Martins, Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Coordinator of CENIMAT, was among the 50 individuals distinguished with the 2025 Chinese Government Friendship Award.

Presented during China’s National Day celebrations, this award is the highest honor granted by the People’s Republic of China to foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s economic and social development.

The distinction recognizes Rodrigo Martins’ role in promoting scientific exchange and international cooperation with China. Since 1986, he has been a regular presence in the country, notably as co-founder of the China–Portugal Joint Innovation Center for Advanced Materials and as a Visiting Professor at Wuhan University of Technology. As President of the European Academy of Sciences, he has also contributed to strengthening scientific and technological cooperation between Europe and China.

The ceremony took place on September 30 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, presided over by the Minister of Human Resources and Social Security (State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs).
