Rodrigo Martins, Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Coordinator of CENIMAT, is one of the 12 experts selected under the EU–Japan Enhanced Dialogue on Advanced Materials, in the context of the negotiations for Japan’s association with the Horizon Europe programme.

The independent group identified critical needs and complementary strengths in five priority areas: construction, energy, mobility, electronics, and data-driven research and development. Professor Rodrigo Martins was responsible for developing all initiatives related to Materials for Electronics.

The group’s final recommendations have now been officially published by the European Commission and the Government of Japan.

The publication was announced on 6 October 2025, in Tokyo, by European Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva, marking an important milestone in strengthening EU–Japan cooperation in research and innovation.

The report reflects the joint effort of leading European and Japanese experts in identifying strategic areas for advancing advanced materials — a key field for sustainable industrial transformation, technological sovereignty, and the green and digital transitions.

The professor’s participation highlights the international recognition of the scientific excellence of CENIMAT|i3N, as well as its active role in shaping global science and innovation policies grounded in knowledge.
