The Chemistry Laboratory at CENIMAT|i3N, in operation since 2018, has earned the “Green” certification from the international organisation My Green Lab, making it the second NOVA FCT laboratory to achieve the highest level on this global sustainability scale.
This laboratory, dedicated to researching new materials and chemical processes applied to advanced technologies—such as electronic devices and solar energy—stands out for its focus on high-performance, sustainable solutions. The work undertaken integrates fundamental chemical research with materials engineering, promoting the creation of innovative and sustainable responses for emerging fields such as flexible electronics, photonics and renewable energy. It is also distinguished by its safe, rigorous, and collaborative environment, supporting all phases of the scientific process, from chemical design to technological application.
The certification process involved the commitment of 32 initiative ambassadors, ranging from master’s students to doctoral researchers. The “Green” level—the highest on the My Green Lab evaluation scale—recognises that the NOVA FCT laboratory already meets more than 80% of best sustainability practices, including efficient management of energy, water, waste, equipment, reagents, materials, and processes.
This recognition results from the involvement of CENIMAT|i3N in NOVA Green Labs, a programme coordinated by the Pro-Rectorate for Sustainability at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, with technical support from Zero Waste Lab, and reaffirms NOVA FCT’s commitment to excellent, responsible research in alignment with international sustainability standards.
