NOVA School of Science and Technology has officially become a Partner Organisation of the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative, promoted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). With this integration, the institution joins the UN’s global network dedicated to reducing disaster risk and building more resilient communities.
The announcement was made at the opening of the Conference on Resilient Cities and Towns, held on December 9 in NOVA FCT’s Main Auditorium, which brought together 180 participants and representatives from around 80 Portuguese municipalities. The first day focused on the central role of science, knowledge, and innovation in preparing territories for environmental risks and challenges.
“This partnership represents international recognition of the scientific and community work we have been developing over the past years. Joining this project allows NOVA FCT to strengthen its contribution to safer and better-prepared cities, capable of facing challenges ranging from extreme weather events to sustainable land management,” said José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT.
Through its Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and the MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, NOVA FCT has promoted in Almada a Living Lab devoted to community and ecosystem resilience and sustainability. The initiative integrates several applied research projects and community engagement activities — working with people and for people — reinforcing the institution’s commitment to knowledge transfer and cooperation with local stakeholders.
NOVA FCT also partnered with the Municipalities of Almada, Seixal, and Sesimbra to co-organize the 13th National Meeting of Resilient Cities and Towns. Following the first day on the School Campus, the event continued over the next few days with the joint participation of the three municipalities, establishing itself as a collaborative forum for sharing experiences and addressing the challenges of territorial resilience.
