Pedro Corte Real appointed President of the Institute for Social Security

Pedro Corte Real, professor and researcher at NOVA FCT’s Department of Mathematics, has been appointed President of the Institute for Social Security (ISS) on an interim basis.

The appointment, published in the Diário da República (Official Gazette), took effect on December 1, 2025, following the vacancy of the position due to the passing of Octávio Félix de Oliveira.

According to the official order, the appointment of Pedro Corte Real aims to ensure the normal and efficient functioning of the Institute for Social Security. He is authorized to maintain his teaching and research activities at higher education institutions.

With a career spanning more than three decades at NOVA FCT and extensive experience in leadership, consultancy, and actuarial roles in national and international institutions, Pedro Corte Real combines a strong scientific background with a deep connection to public administration and the financial sector—reinforcing NOVA FCT’s presence in positions of high responsibility within public administration.

Throughout his career, he has served as Director of the Department of Statistical Methodology at Statistics Portugal (INE), President of the Ministry of Solidarity and Social Security’s Institute of Informatics, I.P., and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Montepio Gestão de Ativos – Investment Fund Management Company.

The Commission for Recruitment and Selection for Public Administration (CReSAP) will initiate the public recruitment process for the permanent appointment to the position.
