Inês Pereira-Gomes and Gonçalo Carro Pedro, students from the Department of Chemistry, won awards in the Oral Communication and Poster categories, having their work recognised among specialists from over 30 countries during the 7th International Caparica Symposium on Nanoparticles/Nanomaterials & Applications, which took place from 25 to 29 January in Costa de Caparica.

7th International Caparica Symposium on Nanoparticles/Nanomaterials & Applications (ISN2A 2026)
Inês Pereira-Gomes, a student of the Master’s in Bioorganic Chemistry (MQB), secured 2nd place in the voting for Best Shotgun Oral Communication. The student presented the work “BTI-Functionalized Silica-Coated Gold Nanostars: A Dual-Emissive and Photocatalytic Nanomaterial”. This research, which forms part of her master's dissertation, was developed in collaboration with the University of Angers – CNRS (France) and stood out for its scientific excellence and multidisciplinary nature.
In turn, Gonçalo Carro Pedro, from the Doctoral Programme in Chemistry (PDQ), won the Best Poster Award (ex-aequo). The doctoral student presented the project “Aggregation-Induced Emission via Water-Driven Nanoaggregation in Dansyl-Derived Chemosensors for Heavy Metal Sensing”. Focused on fluorescent and multifunctional materials, the work is part of his thesis and results from a partnership with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (Sofia) and the University of Jaén (Spain).
The organisation of this edition relied on the logistical and scientific support of the BIOSCOPE group, as well as the strong mobilisation of researchers from LAQV-REQUIMTE and students from the Faculty. By gathering 152 delegates from over 30 countries, ISN2A 2026 reinforced NOVA FCT’s international positioning and the quality of its research.
