On 18 April 2026, NOVA FCT hosted the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Regional Phase of the 12th Portuguese Geology Olympiad (OPG), organised by the Geological Society of Portugal. The event, held in Building VII on the Caparica Campus, brought together 60 high school students from 24 schools across the region.
The Department of Earth Sciences (DCT) was the main host of the initiative, with its laboratories open for visits by participants — students, Biology and Geology teachers, and parents. For many in attendance, it was their first opportunity to visit a university campus and its laboratories.
The scientific programme included the lecture "Energy Storage in Geological Media", presented by Ricardo Pereira, a researcher at DCT.
The organisation of the event was supported by the Events and Protocol Division, with the voluntary collaboration of DCT faculty and researchers, in particular José Carlos Kullberg, Coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Geology for Sustainability at NOVA FCT and President of the Geological Society of Portugal, Joaquim Simão, Lígia Castro, and Carlos Galhano. The event also benefited from the services of the Staff House, responsible for the refreshments offered to visitors.
