The NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT) announces the reopening of the renovated and modernized Fraústo da Silva Residence, a facility managed by NOVA’s Social Services, located on the Caparica Campus, with a capacity of 210 beds.
Originally inaugurated 25 years ago, in 2001, the Fraústo da Silva Residence has now been refurbished through an investment of €3 million (€3,084,890), of which approximately €2.5 million (€2,481,904) was funded by the National Erasmus+ Agency (PRR/PNAES and the Environmental Fund / energy efficiency). The company responsible for the renovation was Anorte – Construção e Engenharia, Ltd.
In addition to the 210 beds, the residence includes kitchens, laundry facilities, study rooms, common areas, a gym, a cinema room, and parking.
The average monthly price for student accommodation at the Fraústo da Silva Residence is €91 for scholarship students. Interested students should contact SASNOVA, which manages the residence, and apply through the form available at the following link.
“The renovation of the Fraústo da Silva Residence, located on the Caparica Campus, has long been a goal of the NOVA FCT community. We are very pleased to announce its reopening following a major intervention to transform it into a safer, more welcoming, and more functional space for all,” said José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT. “The reopening of the Fraústo da Silva Residence is part of a broader plan to expand the School's housing capacity, which we believe will help address housing access challenges.” According to the Dean, access to housing is one of the main barriers to attracting students. “As a leading higher education institution, our responsibility also includes ensuring good housing conditions, making access to university education more equitable and enabling students to have the best conditions to pursue their studies and research,” he concluded.
“The PRR, through the National Erasmus+ Agency and the Environmental Fund, gave us the opportunity to rehabilitate and upgrade the Fraústo da Silva Residence, improving living conditions and adding new amenities, such as the gym, which contribute to student well-being,” said João Afonso, Administrator of SASNOVA, noting that “for SASNOVA, it is about more than just providing a bed—we aim to ensure that the experience at Fraústo is one of shared living and personal growth.” This intervention is part of a broader objective, he added, as “NOVA has equality of opportunity as one of its core principles. It is therefore natural that one of its priorities at a time when access to housing is one of the main sources of inequality in Portugal is to increase and improve the availability of student housing, whether through residences or through the Rede 1/4 network.
In 2026, NOVA FCT will also inaugurate the NOVA FCT Student Residence Hall, a new residence currently under construction on campus, which will add more than 200 beds.
In total, the School anticipates nearly 900 beds in the future for students, faculty, and researchers: in addition to the Fraústo da Silva Residence, two new residences (one privately funded) and the second phase of the Fraústo da Silva Residence are planned.
