A research work developed at NOVA FCT was awarded first place in the international Art & Science competition integrated into the Congress on Numerical Methods in Engineering (CMN 2026), held last week in Gijón, Spain.
The “artwork,” entitled “Torsion-warping in highly curved beams,” was created by Pedro Jacinto, a PhD student in Civil Engineering (PDEC) at NOVA FCT, Rodrigo Gonçalves (Professor and researcher at the Department of Civil Engineering, NOVA FCT), and Manuel Ritto Corrêa (Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico).
The work explores the phenomenon of torsion in curved beams, highlighting the complexity of structural behavior, namely the dependence of the warping function and the position of the torsion-shear center on beam curvature and cross-section orientation.
Promoted by the Sociedad Española de Mecánica e Ingeniería Computacionales, the initiative aims to bring science and art closer together, encouraging new ways of communicating complex scientific concepts through visual approaches.
