The SPARCS project, developed by Rui Guilherme Vaz Gonçalves and António Miguel Teixeira Vicente, students at NOVA FCT, won the 2026 edition of the NOVA impACT! Challenges. The final took place during Demo Day, the event marking the conclusion of the programme.
Over several weeks, the nine participating teams were challenged to develop solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The programme included workshops, specialist mentoring and initial seed funding, helping teams refine and strengthen their proposals.
During the final session, the jury awarded the top prize of €2,000 to SPARCS. The project presents an innovative approach to solar energy based on independent mini-modules designed to simplify installation, expansion and adaptation to different contexts. Its aim is to address the challenges associated with limited and unstable access to energy.
Two honourable mentions were also awarded. The VEM – Mobility with Dignity project, developed by Daniela Seabra and Marco Santos, was recognised for proposing a new category of assisted mobility designed to enhance autonomy, accessibility and inclusion. Meanwhile, FungiFoam, developed by Valentin Scheiermann, Marlon Castillo, Margarida Ramos and Gustavo Brito, from NOVA FCT and the University of Aveiro, introduced thermal insulation panels made from mycelium, offering a more sustainable alternative to conventional materials.
The 2026 edition brought together nine teams, reinforcing the role of NOVA impACT! Challenges as a platform for innovation and entrepreneurship. The programme has established itself as a space for experimenting with and developing solutions that generate social and environmental impact, in line with the global priorities set out by the United Nations.
