****** ATTENTION ******

NON EUROPEAN UNION NATIONALS

BEFORE LEAVING YOUR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN WE ADVISE YOU TO ASK THE NEAREST PORTUGUESE EMBASSY WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO APPLY FOR A STUDY VISA (NOT TOURISM) TO PORTUGAL EVEN IF YOU INTEND TO ENTER PORTUGAL FROM ANOTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRY.

Students are strongly advised to do this at an early stage and to consider that the issue of visa can take some months.

Doing this you avoid future complications with the VISA application procedure.

All THE STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE a criminal record issued by their home country authorities, even if they haven't selected yet the country where they will do the next semester.

Students, living in a Schengen country for less than a year, must present their home criminal record when they will apply for the Portguguese visa.

Students, legally living in a Schengen country for more than a year, must present the criminal record from that country.

The students may choose one of the folowing solutions:

1 - Students, already living in a Schengen country, may ask to the local authorities for an authenticated copy of the home country criminal record, that they have presented when they have applied for the visa or when they have entered in that country. This authenticated copy must be presented when students will aplly for the Portuguese visa;

2 - Students, intending to come to Portugal as Erasmus students, even if Portugal is not  their first country, must bring the criminal record of their home country.  Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) - Foreigners Service will authorize them to present this document, even expired (this document has a validity of 3 months).  Before accept it local authorities  will confirm that there is no registration of any legal penalty during the last year.

Visa/Residence Permit Procedures

EU NATIONALS: DO NOT need a VISA. They just need to present ID card or Passport.

When you arrive in Portugal, after taking care of all your details at the Lodging and Mobility Office, it's necessary to obtain the European Union Certificate in our country within 90 days after your arrival. A month after your arrival we will give you all the details. Don’t worry about that because we will take care of this with you.

NON EU NATIONALS: coming from another European country.

Since last August 2nd 2013, UNL-FCT Students don't need a Study Visa to enter in Portugal, if they are coming from another European Union country, and they have  a valid residence permit or a visa, so a priori it will enough. In any case and in order to avoid problems, we invite you to check it at the  nearest Consular Section of the Embassy of Portugal.

Please, get more information at the nearest local Portuguese Embassy/Consulate, namely the steps you need to take before leaving your home country or the country where you are.

When you arrive in Portugal you don't need to apply for the European Union Certificate because YOU MUST ALREADY HAVE your Study Visa or residence permit.

Please pay careful attention to the expiry date of your Study Visa. It is necessary to book an appointment at SEF but Lodging and Mobility Office will help you.
For further details please visit the webpage of our  Foreigners Service – “Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF)”.
