Master in Medical Microbiology

The next edition (start in the academic year of 2023/2024) of the Master in Medical Microbiology will be coordinated by FCT NOVA

Universidade NOVA de Lisboa offers the Master in Medical Microbiology, through four of its Schools:  Faculdade de Ciências Médicas|NOVA Medical School (FCM|NMS), NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA, Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT NOVA), and Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA).

- The 13th Edition (academic years 2023/2024 and 2024/2025) will be coordinated by FCT NOVA.

Duration: 2 years (4 semesters).

Objetivos

The general objective of the Master in Medical Microbiology is to train students to become experts in the field. It uses a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach, combining theoretical and practical training, that provides its graduates with capabilities in the application of the most advanced laboratory diagnostics technologies, microbiological testing, inspection and quality assurance in microbiology laboratories.

Plano curricular

Saídas profissionais

Advanced training in Medical Microbiology will provide access to a more advanced scientific and technology development corresponding to a PhD (3rd cycle).

It can also provide access to areas of research and development (R&D) in national or European public health sectors, particularly in:

  • Medical centers and hospitals;
  • Clinical, veterinary, and research laboratories;
  • Public health.

Structure and organization

1st  year

The first semester comprises the mandatory and nuclear Curricular Units.

The second semester is flexible, allowing the selection of 5 optional Curricular Units (out of a group of 16), allowing the student to build a curriculum adapted to his/her needs.

The Curricular Units are mainly taught in Portuguese and have diverse contents. They all have a strong practical component, particularly in the second semester. Attendance to the classes is mandatory and admission to the final assessment depends on attendance of 2/3 of the classes (except for student-workers).

The choice of optional Curricular Units is subject to numerus clausus, and the selection is based on academic performance.

2nd year

Dedicated to experimental work and preparation of the original Thesis to obtain the Master degree in Medical Microbiology. The theme of the Thesis will be developed in a laboratory in one of the four institutions involved. However, the student is free to select any other laboratory, in Portugal or abroad, after approval of the Scientific Committee and appointment of an internal co-supervisor.

Sobre o Department of Life Sciences

The Department of Life Sciences (Departamento de Ciências da Vida - DCV) focuses its activity on teaching and research in fundamental Biology relevant for application in Biotechnology and Biomedicine.

DCV is responsibel for BSc's Courses - Licenciatura em Biologia Celular e Molecular (1st Cycle), MSc's - Mestrado em Genética molecular e Biomedicina (2nd Cycle) and PhD Program in Biology and PhD Program in Biotechnology (Co-coordination with DQ/NOVA FCT), while collaborating in several other courses with NOVA.

DCV is organised in a single Scientific Section, grouping the scientific ares of Microbiology, Genetics and Cell Biology. Research at DCV is integrated into International and National collaborative efforts in the areas of Microbiology, Human and Molecular Genetics, Biotechnology, Nanobiotechnology and Cell Biology.
