Programme scope and presentation

The Undergraduate Programme in Mechanical Engineering of Nova School of Science & Technology  is a three-year first-cycle course stemming from the splitting of the former Integrated Master Programme in Mechanical Engineering. The Undergraduate Programme will start in the 2021/22 academic year and it is accredited by the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior – A3ES) for the next six years.

Mechanical Engineering has application to diverse aspects of all fields of economic activity. Aiming at encompassing this universality, our Undergraduate Programme offers a comprehensive preparation. In the third year, students elect a subject (curricular unit), or possibly two, from a vast portfolio of optional subjects offered by other NOVA School of Science and Technology programmes.

In the third year, students have the opportunity to perform an internship at a company, and thus become acquainted with the reality of a business or of an industry, as well as with the activity of engineers in that environment. The Programme concludes with a product development project, carried out in a collaborative environment.

The evolution of our university level Undergraduate Programme is our Master Programme in Mechanical Engineering (2nd cycle). Nevertheless, the Undergraduate Programme also allows a direct exit to the job market, for further development in a professional context. The employability level in the field of Mechanical Engineering has been very high.

Objectives

  • To offer a comprehensive preparation in the fields of: solid and fluid mechanics, applied thermodynamics, structural mechanics, structural dynamics, manufacturing processes, materials characterization and behaviour, and technical drawing as a relevant communication tool for a mechanical engineer.
  • To promote experimental and computational assignments, essential for the development of a mechanical engineer.
  • To offer a fundamental and solid education in engineering sciences at large, and in mechanical engineering in particular, that allows our graduates understand, to analyse and to solve problems, even if entirely novel to them, and that empowers them with an attitude of autonomy and critical thinking, so that they will succeed on their actions anywhere in the world.
  • To promote an integrated vision of engineering, through the completion of a product development project and of an internship at a company, following the programme’s subjects (curricular units).
  • To prepare not only the engineer, but the person as well, through the development of soft-skills by the complementary formation offered by the FCT Curricular Profile.

Academic personnel

The teaching staff of the Undergraduate Programme in Mechanical Engineering benefits from its vast experience accumulated over the Integrated Master Programme in Mechanical Engineering.

The great majority of the academic staff develops research activity at the Research and Development Unit in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial - UNIDEMI, a research centre, assessed as Excellent, hosted by the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

External relations

Erasmus+ programme: Under the Erasmus+ programme, students have the possibility of performing part of their studies abroad for a given period of time. The Erasmus experience is highly rewarding at both academic and personal levels.

 

Relations with companies: The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering maintain excellent cooperative relations with a wide range of companies, enhancing the engagement of our students in internships and with the job market.

Prospective careers

Our Undergraduate Programme in Mechanical Engineering provides an excellent foundation for a professional career in all fields of economic activity. Those concluding the programme may integrate design teams and assume functions involving: equipment selection, industrial and manufacturing technology, maintenance and management, production planning, computer aided modelling and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), thermodynamic and heat transfer processes, equipment for energy conversion or HVAC, structural mechanics solutions, noise and vibration harshness, fluid networks, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, among several other situations.

Specific fields of economic activity are:

  • Industry: aeronautical and automotive, and their components; naval construction and repair; metalworking; electromechanics; machine tools; metallurgical; mining; refrigeration and HVAC; energy conversion; transports; communications; chemical and pharmaceutical; food and beverages; glass and ceramics; paper; textile; plastics; among other processing industries.
  • Services: health care; transports including airlines; public sector; insurance; supply chain; supply or collection & treatment of fluids, among several others.
  • Consulting and design: engineering design and analysis offices; among others.
  • Other opportunities: research and development activities in mechanics or related fields.

Portuguese students: 697 €/year

Foreign students: 7000 €/year

About the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (DEMI) is a permanent organic unit of Nova School of Science and Technology, dedicated to teaching, to fundamental and applied scientific research and to the provision of services in the fields of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

DEMI counts, currently, with 5 employees and 44 teachers who are committed to offering the best teaching experience and the best knowledge to their students, helping them develop their skills and achieve their personal and professional goals.

DEMI teachers also collaborate, at different levels, with diverse public and private institutions, particularly in the development of research projects in scientific and technological areas of relevance to Industrial and Mechanical Engineering, which aim to respond to the needs of the society.
