The Sustainable FCT NOVA initiative began in 2018, under the supervision and monitoring of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, and is currently integrated into the organic structure of NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA.

The NOVA School of Science and Technology is committed to align its activities and responsibilities with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, thereby contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The education of highly qualified and critically minded people, aware of social and environmental problems, capable of leading change, and the development of research and innovation that make the planet + Sustainable are the main pillars of our commitment.

The Vision of Sustainable FCT NOVA was built on November 21st, 2018, in a collaborative way with several sectors of the School - Departments, Research Centers, Services and Students - and aims at:

A collaborative community of knowledge creation and sharing, committed to a sustainable and inclusive future.

Innovation, solidarity and nature protection foster an integrated and fair living, which motivates the FCT NOVA

community to assume sustainability – environmental, social and economic – as a pillar to all activities.

Since the beginning of this project in 2018, several initiatives, meetings and the establishment of partnerships in favor of Sustainability were carried out on the FCT NOVA Campus. However, this vision can only be fully realized through the joint involvement and effort of the entire FCT community.

In order to promote Sustainability at FCT NOVA, activities will be developed across several areas of intervention, such as Waste, Energy, Water, Outdoor Spaces, Food, Engagement and Communication, with the following aims in mind:

  1.  Improve FCT NOVA's internal activities and operations
  2.  Promote a healthy lifestyle on Campus
  3.  Assure a responsible governance towards Sustainability
  4.  Engage and activate the FCT community towards Sustainability

Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland Report, 1987). This is achieved through a set of ecologically correct, economically viable, socially fair and culturally diverse strategies, policies, actions and attitudes. Along with technical and scientific innovation, sustainability is founded on changing behaviors and decisions at the individual and organizational levels.

Eng. Joana Santos, sustainability specialist at FCT NOVA, and Dr. Antje Disterheft, PhD researcher at CENSE, were present at the creation of the Portuguese Sustainable Campus Network (RCS) on behalf of FCT NOVA, on November 27th 2018, alongside with several members of portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEI). RCS is a national network of HEI with the purpose of creating a platform for collaboration, dialogue, reflection and exchange of experiences on initiatives and ways to implement the Sustainable Development Goals in HEI, aiming to make all participating university campuses more sustainable.

The United Nations approved, in 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 193 United Nations Member States have reached a consensus on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which include 169 targets, measured against 230 indicators that seek to address the main challenges facing humanity with the aim of transforming the current production and consumption model into a more sustainable one.
