FCT’s Researchers develop product that increases the healing process

10-07-2014

Cecília Roque, head of FCT’s Biomolecular Engineering Lab, and her team, composed by Ana Margarida Dias, Ana Sofia Pina and Ricardo Branco, participated in Porrtugal’s COTEC, COHiTEC 2014 program with a device used for microorganisms identification of in wounds in a non-invasive and quick way.The use of this product accelerates the beginning of an adequate antibiotic use, increases in 20% the healing process and reduces 3 times the risk and mortality and the treatment cost of each infected patient  in 22%. It is estimated that each person undergoes two surgeries in life. Almost 10% of surgical wounds infect, thus damaging the healing and increasing the use of antibiotics. The "CrystalSense" project was developed under the COHiTEC Program and was one of the 16 projects to finish it. For four months, the  participants of this program that works  with  multidisciplinary researcher teams, management students and mentors, generate product ideas based on the participants technologies and prepare a business project for one of these ideas.
