Professor Octavio Mateus discovers one of the world's largest pterosaurs trai

One of the world's largest and rarest pterosaurs (flying reptiles) trails was discovered in 2010 at one of Lourinhã's beaches by Professor Octávio Mateus, who studied it together with Simon Kongshøj Callesen.

The study of these 152 million-year-old footprints from the Upper Jurassic period also brings new data to science. On the one hand, paleontologists were not aware until now whether pterosaurs, flying reptiles, moved with two or four legs. The discovery of this trail of footprints clearly demonstrates a quadruped movement.

This footprints trail can be classified as being both of national and international reference and will certainly strengthen Portugal's position in the scientific world. Its great importance will continue to be studied in the coming years.
