NOVA FCT joins the celebration of International Day of Mathematics

05-03-2024

NOVA FCT, through its Department of Mathematic (DM) and NOVA Math, is once again celebrating International Day of Mathematics. This event serves as a tribute to the indispensable role mathematics plays in driving progress across fields like Science, Technology, Engineering, and society at large.

As part of these festivities, NOVA FCT will be orchestrating three engaging initiatives. The first, already in progress, is a competition tailored for secondary school students and educators titled "Teaching and Learning Maths as a Game!". This competition encourages the creation of projects that make mathematics education enjoyable and engaging within school environments. (Information on Portuguese here)

On 14 March, you can explore the "Playing with Maths" fair, which take place in the atrium of Building VII on the Caparica Campus. Here, you'll have access to various activities that will demystify the subject with games and challenges, and everyone is invited to participate.

On the same day, between 1pm and 2pm, you can take part in the forum "~(Playing with Maths): strategies for academic success" which will be held in amphitheatre 1A of Building VII. The guest speakers for this session are Carla Quintão, Vice-Dean for the Pedagogical Council, Ana Luísa Custódio, Fabio Chalub, both DM professors. The moderator will be Paulo Doutor, also a DM professor.

Designated by UNESCO in November 2019, March 14th marks International Mathematical Day (IMD), with this year's celebrations centering around the theme "Playing with Math."
