Master’s in Mathematics Teaching in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education

The Master’s in Mathematics Teaching aligns with contemporary educational demands, focusing on the most up-to-date curricula and innovative practices for teaching Mathematics.

Through a personalized approach, this Master’s program allows students to enhance their scientific, technological, and technical skills, essential for professional success. The program also promotes the personal and social development of future teachers, instilling attitudes of reflection, autonomy, cooperation, active participation in the educational community, critical analysis, innovation, and pedagogical research.

Santander Scholarships for Teaching Career Incentive

The Santander Foundation is awarding financial support scholarships, worth €750, to first-year students enrolled in Master's degrees in Education for the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education. NOVA FCT is one of the participating institutions and has 14 scholarships available. This initiative aims to attract more candidates to the teaching profession and help address the shortage of teachers in Portugal.

Curriculum

For whom

  1. Holders of evidence of oral and written proficiency in the Portuguese language and of essential rules of logical and critical argumentation (Article 17(1) of Decree-Law No. 79/2014 of May 14, as currently worded).
  2. Applicants with a minimum of 120 ECTS credits in the field of Mathematics*, in accordance with the Annex to Decree-Law No. 9-A/2025 of February 14, and who:

a) meet the conditions set out in points a) to c) of Article 17(1) of Decree-Law No. 74/2006 of March 24, as currently worded;

b) meet the conditions set out in point d) of Article 17(1) of Decree-Law No. 74/2006 of March 24, as currently worded, and fulfill the access requirements for supervised teaching practice under the terms of Article 11(3) of Decree-Law No. 9-A/2025 of February 14.

Under point two, applications are also accepted from candidates who, at the time, have obtained at least 75% of the required credits (Article 18(7) of Decree-Law No. 79/2014 of May 14, as currently worded), with the remaining credits to be completed before the conclusion of the master degree.

*Candidates who do not meet the full 120 ECTS requirement in Mathematics can still apply. In this case, an individualized Mathematics study plan will be prepared to allow the candidate to complete their grounding before enrolling in the master’s program.

 

Important Notes:

  • In addition to the bachelor's degree certificate, all applications must include a transcript listing all higher education courses completed, with completion dates, grades, and, whenever possible, the number of ECTS credits.
  • In the case of non-graduate applicants who have a well-founded expectation of completing their degree in the current academic year, the average grade - rounded to the nearest integer number - of all completed curricular units in the field of Mathematics, as listed in the certificate submitted with the application, will be considered.

    For applicants whose degree is not in the field of Mathematics, the average grade - rounded to the nearest integer number - of all completed curricular units in the field of Mathematics, as listed in the certificated submitted with the application, will be considered.

    The results announcement for this program will not follow the general timeframe for other master’s programs at the university, as it requires a Portuguese language exam.

The Department of Mathematics at NOVA FCT is a permanent teaching and research unit of NOVA FCT.
