FCT Coding Fest - "Code Time" at FCT NOVA

Pedro and Leonor, sitting side by side in front of a computer, discuss how to compose some colorful code blocks in order to command a hungry little monster and help him find his favorite cookies.

All this happened at FCT NOVA laboratories, where about 250 students from 10 elementary schools, together by their teachers and some parents, participated in the FCT Coding Fest 2016, an FCT NOVA initiative through its Department of Informatics and NOVA LINCS.

All students interacted in a fun "Code Hour" activity, followed by an inter-school competition, the winners were by cycle, the EB N1 schools of Telheiras (1st cycle), the Military College (2nd Cycle) and the Colégio Campo de Flores (3rd cycle). At the end of the activity, no more than 9839 blocks were used in the resolution of 1471 challenges by 243 students from 10 schools!

During the activity and competition, more than 160 teachers, educators, parents and other guests attended the lecture "Computing Science for Every Child: England's experience" presented by Professor Duncan Maidens, from the Birmingham University and a member of the Computing at School Organization.

The FCT Coding Fest 2016 is part of the "Portugal Code Movement" and was the stage for the official launch of this great national initiative by the Secretary of State for Science Technology and Higher Education, Fernanda Rollo, by the Secretary of State for Education, João Costa, and by the Secretary of State for Labor, Solidarity and Social Security, Miguel Cabrita.
