FCT NOVA researchers create drone and robot boat to help migrants

The organization of the "The UAE Drone for Good Award" announced that the FCT NOVA team is one of the 10 finalists in the 2017 edition. This is a contest that awards high prizes, thus generating a large number of competitors. In 2016 there were more than 800 individual entries from 53 different countries, but mainly it counted with contributions from globally recognized companies and research groups (ETH Zürich, Nokia, Imperial College - Carnegie Mellon University, etc ...).

The 4Right2Life Drones project, based on a cooperative team of robots (ASV & aquatic drone), aims to offer a solution for the permanent monitoring of critical routes and early detection of refugee vessels with the main purpose of saving more human lives.

If the project wins the competition, the prize will allow it to move to a more consolidated stage, with an unsinkable boat construction capable of facing the most adverse sea conditions. The device of this project could also be used to operate on the Portuguese coast either to respond to accidents or to detect cases of pollution. The team has already had contacts with the Portuguese Navy, participating in exercises and collaborating with the research groups of the Naval School.

The project will be dismantled and sent to Dubai where four members of the team will be present from 12 to 19 February.
