Rodrigo Martins, professor and researcher in the Department of Material Sciences, was elected member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC), the highest body of scientific management. The professor will take office on 1 January 2021.

He was one of five new members who were appointed by an independent Identification Committee, composed of six distinguished scientists appointed by the European Commission and chaired by Carl-Henrik Heldin, Chairman of the Board of the Nobel Foundation. The selection process involved consultations with the scientific community.

He is the second Portuguese, since the founding of the ERC, to perform such functions.
