Professors of the Department of Mathematics occupy important positions in two of the most prestigious actuarial institutions in Portugal

04-01-2022

Gracinda Guerreiro, professor, and researcher at the Department of Mathematics at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, is the new President of the Certification Jury for Responsible Actuaries of the Insurance and Pension Fund Supervisory Authority (ASF).

The ASF is the organization responsible for regulating and supervising the insurance, reinsurance, pension funds, and respective management entities and insurance mediation activities.

The Department of Mathematics, moreover, has its representation at the Institute of Portuguese Actuaries (IAP), with Maria de Lourdes Afonso chairing the Board of this institution.

The IAP is a non-profit technical and scientific professional association, which aims to encourage and provide research, development, and improvement of science and technology in the analysis and decision-making of institutions, regarding their management in economic, financial, and asset security fields and in all aspects and applications relevant to business risks.

These appointments prove the technical quality of the faculty and extend the pioneering role that our School played in this field. NOVA created the "Actuarial Sciences" branch of the degree in Applied Mathematics, during the '80s of the 20th century. Currently, we provide two specialized courses in the area: the Undergraduate Programme in Applied Mathematics to Risk Management and the Master's Degree in Actuarial Mathematics.
