GLAZE Project to Study Iznik Tiles

15-04-2025

The GLAZE project – Color and Science Behind Iznik Tiles, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, is coordinated by João Pedro Veiga, professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration of NOVA FCT and researcher at the VICARTE and CENIMAT | i3N. The project aims to study the Ottoman ceramic tradition.

With an interdisciplinary approach, GLAZE brings together several research units from NOVA University Lisbon — CENIMAT, VICARTE, and NOVA LINCS — in partnership with the HERCULES Laboratory from the University of Évora and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Over the course of three years, the team will investigate the Ottoman ceramic tradition, with a particular focus on the iconic Iznik tiles, exploring their chromatic transitions and innovative manufacturing techniques. Using non-invasive scientific analysis techniques, the project seeks to deepen knowledge of the material and visual composition of these ceramics, based on the collection held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.

The project will also extend its research to ceramic productions from Iznik and Damascus, contributing to the understanding of historical networks of cultural and technological exchange within the Islamic world.

Alongside scientific research, GLAZE also includes the development of interactive digital educational tools, fostering a connection between historical research and contemporary innovation, with the aim of reaching diverse audiences.
