NOVA is the newest member of CESAER

22-10-2018

Professor Virgílio Cruz Machado, FCT NOVA Director, represented NOVA at  the annual meeting of CESAER (Conference of European Schools of Advanced Engineering and Research).

Fifty universities of science and technology, belonging to 25 countries of the CESAER network, were assembled at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (UPB), Romania, discussing  the future of science and technology in Europe.

The meeting also marks the entrance of NOVA. It is the third Portuguese university to be part of this prestigious network that since 1990 has become "the strong and united voice of S & T universities in Europe".

CESAER underlines the need to safeguard the common (European) values such as: research integrity, academic freedom and institutional autonomy. Sustainable peace and prosperity incorporating respect for the rule of law and human rights, democratic citizenship, evidence-based policymaking and the free circulation of knowledge are paramount for the functioning of universities.

The meeting coincides with the celebrations of the 200 years of UPB and aims to promote participation in the area of research, teaching and innovation for the benefit of society.

The event thus emphasises the value of European collaboration in research, education and innovation for the benefit of society. Key topics discussed include the role of universities of science and technology in research and innovation infrastructures and the ongoing interinstitutional negotiations on the next generation of EU funding instruments. Our Members will meet with the European Commissioner for Regional Development, Corina Crețu.
