Barcelos cock reborn as symbol of the quality of Portuguese research on international scientific journal cover

18-03-2019

The Barcelos Cock returns to represent the country this time as a symbol of the quality of research made in Portugal. This is the second time the BIOSCOPE Group and José Capelo, Researcher and Professor in the Department of Chemistry of FCT NOVA, use national symbols to draw attention to Portuguese science.

The team composed by José Capelo, Carlos Lodeiro, Hugo Santos, researchers from FCT NOVA, together with Gilberto Igrejas from the University of Trás-os-Montes, and with the help of Miguel Spuch, Swiss chemist and designer, placed the Barcelos cock on the cover of the Journal of Proteomics. This cock was created using the Cytoscape program, which gives color to protein interactions, is an extremely important tool for diagnostics, prognosis and drug development.

As early as 2017, the BIOSCOPE Group had managed to recreate the Portuguese flag with the same tool, offering it to the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, during the visit to FCT NOVA in the framework of the 40th anniversary of the Faculty.

The special edition of the Journal of Proteomicse highlights the 2017 International Conference on Analytical Proteomics of Caparica (ICAP), which took place Caparica with the collaboration of FCT NOVA. This year's edition, which runs from July 8 to 11, is already in preparation, with the 200 available seats almost complete.
