15-03-2019

The world business center, Dubai, which hosts multiple influential companies, has just received seven finalist students from FCT NOVA, within the scope of this Faculty's internationalization strategy. During the last week of January 2019 the seven ambassadors had the opportunity to visit 14 companies, to know how they worked and how is daily life and work in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

"It was a very intense trip, visiting three companies a day. The companies were very, very interesting and I liked to hear their representatives presenting the structure, the functions, the positions and the economic situation ", says Miguel Saldanha, student of the 5th year of the Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering.

The visit was specially programmed to inform FCT NOVA students about the economy and culture of another country, putting them in contact with companies operating in the territory.

"I was very impressed with Masdar, a renewable energy company that has wind farms in several parts of the world," says Pedro Ropio, a student of the 5th year of the Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering.

"There is a lot going on in Dubai, companies are full of projects and willingness to grow. Many with plans to double the number of staff in short periods, one of them said they wanted to do it within a year. I was very enthusiastic and I see myself working in Dubai ", finishes Miguel Saldanha.

Having contact with another lifestyle and getting to know what it is to live in a city like Dubai was another of the objectives of promoting these trips.

Thiago Coelho, doctoral student in Industrial Engineering, sums up the experience of visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi as amazing and incredible. "Whether for the architecture of skyscrapers or the education of emirates, but also for cultural diversity. Not to mention the infinite surprise when he found a perfectly integrated and free woman - the image of the Muslim countries is of oppressed women and what is found in Dubai are women wearing Burka, Abaya, but also miniskirts, makeup and perfumed " , explains the student.

"I lost all my apprehension on the first day, I did not feel discriminated against and it is very safe to go to Dubai. I came more convinced to work there.”, confirms Ana Carreira, attending the 5th year of the Integrated Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

"The New University of Lisbon has given me the opportunity to learn about the culture and the labor market of the United Arab Emirates," says Diogo Emilio, a finalist student at the Integrated Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
