NOVA Computer Science students distinguished with Gulbenkian New Talents in Artificial Intelligence Scholarship

João Ferreira and Rodrigo Valério, students of the Integrated Master in Computer Science at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, were selected for the Gulbenkian New Talent in Artificial Intelligence 2020-2021 Scholarship Program.

The program is intended for higher education students interested in furthering their study in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

The students selected for the Gulbenkian New Talent Scholarship Program receive a training scholarship to develop research projects under the guidance of tutors, while also participating in a set of training workshops.

Student João Ferreira, supervised by Ricardo Gonçalves, researcher at NOVA LINCS Knowledge-Based Systems Group, will develop a research project under the theme “Ontology Extraction from Artificial Neural Networks.” “The theme under which I will develop the research project is in line with a very current theme in the field of AI research, enabling the justification of the results given by Artificial Neural Networks”, says João Ferreira who adds the work “will also allow contact with two techniques (Neural Networks and Ontologies) quite different, both in terms of functioning and application areas, but both with considerable relevance and usefulness.”

Rodrigo Valério said that this scholarship granted him “the possibility of carrying out research work under the supervision of a specialist tutor in this field, as well as participating in training workshops, which represent unique opportunities for the development of my skills.”

The research project of student Rodrigo Valério, supervised by João Magalhães, a researcher at NOVA LINCS Multimodal Systems Group, will have the theme “Deep Structured Learning for Vision and Knowledge Data.”

"In this work, I intend to improve the understanding of visual information through the integration of visual data and knowledge of the domain. This link will allow creating the bridge between the real world captured in images and video and the way human beings understand this reality," say Rodrigo Valério.
