18-10-2022

The Library of NOVA School of Science and Technology, in partnership with the Nadir Afonso Contemporary Art Museum and the Municipality of Chaves, will present, during the months of November and December 2022 and January 2023, in its gallery of the Caparica Campus, the exhibition "João Machado - The Chemistry of Colour".

With its inauguration scheduled for November 10th, 2022, at 5 p.m., the show will be open to the public until January 19th, 2023.

Dedicated to the work of the sculptor and designer João Machado (b. 1942), this retrospective will recall and revisit his prestigious artistic career, developed over the past five decades, displaying dozens of posters that combine the geometric subtlety of its compositional harmony with its exquisite chromaticism and its unique and unmistakable iconography.

João Machado has received numerous national and international awards in the fields of sculpture, children's illustration, philatelic design and posters. He has achieved worldwide recognition and notoriety in the latter field, and is definitely the most international, prolific and acclaimed Portuguese poster artist of all time.

This exhibition, curated by António Augusto Joel, will highlight the environmental, social and political concerns expressed in the works exhibited, also illustrating the role that this communication process, now essentially digital, can play in the dissemination and promotion of cultural institutions and events.

In addition, he will also document the result of the technical and conceptual changes that the evolution of information technology has brought to the making of posters in recent decades.
