Afonso Bandeira at the NOVA Distinguished Lecture in Mathematics

19-03-2024

The next edition of the NOVA Distinguished Lecture Series in Mathematics will feature Afonso Bandeira, a Professor at ETH Zurich.

In 2022, Afonso Bandeira received the António Aniceto Monteiro Prize, which awards the best research in mathematics, and two years earlier, he was the winner of the Smale Prize (2020), a prize given triennially by the foundations of computational mathematics.

The mathematician will present the lecture "Detecting communities in networks, spontaneous synchronization, and pendulum clocks" on April 3, 2024, at 2:30 pm, in Auditorium 1B - Building VII.

Afonso Bandeira's research interests include Mathematical Statistics, Theoretical Computer Science, Combinatorics, and Optimization. He received his PhD in 2015 from Princeton University and is currently a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich. He is also a member of the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems, the ETH Foundations of Data Science, and the ETH AI Center, and Director of the Institute for Operations Research (IFOR).

The NOVA Distinguished Lecture Series in Mathematics is a joint initiative of NOVA Math and NOVA FCT's Department of Mathematics, which brings together renowned researchers and the NOVA community with the aim of broadening students' mathematical education, presenting new challenges, and awakening their scientific curiosity about maths research.
