André Q. Figueiredo, a PhD student in Biochemistry at NOVA FCT, was awarded the Best Poster Shotgun Prize (ex-aequo) at the 2nd International Conference on Prescriptomics & Personalised Medicine (PRESCRIPTOMICS 2025), held in Costa de Caparica from May 25th to 28th.
The awarded work, entitled “Identification of Novel Tissue Biomarkers in Renal Neoplasms via Absolute Quantitative Proteomics Normalised using the Protein Deglycase DJ-1 (PARK-7),” was recognised for its innovative contribution to biomarker discovery in renal cancer. Supervised by Hugo Santos and José Luis Capelo, from the Department of Chemestry, with the cooperation from Rajih Dhir, University of Pittsburgh, USA, the PhD student combined the Total Protein Approach (TPA) with the PARK-7 protein as an internal standard, significantly improving the precision of mass spectrometry-based proteomic data. This strategy enabled the identification of 18 novel biomarker candidates and reinforces prescriptomics as a foundation for personalised medicine in renal oncology.
This marks the fourth award received by André Figueiredo during his PhD at NOVA FCT, underscoring the quality and impact of the research developed in the field of personalised medicine.
