NOVA FCT student awarded best poster prize at international aquaculture conference

04-06-2025

Inês Ferreira, a PhD student at NOVA FCT and a member of the DES Solve research group, was awarded the Best Poster Prize at the International Conference & Expo on Aquaculture & Fisheries – Aquaculture Horizons 2025, recently held in Setúbal.

The winning work, entitled "Halophyte plants vs Seaweeds: antioxidant activity", explores the potential of halophyte plants — species that thrive in saline environments — as a nutritionally rich alternative to seaweeds, with a particular focus on their antioxidant activity.

This international recognition highlights the importance of research into halophytes, which are being considered a promising sustainable food source in the face of growing concerns over food security and climate change.

Aquaculture Horizons is a prestigious event that brings together experts, researchers, and industry leaders from around the world to share knowledge and discuss the latest advances in aquaculture.

Inês Ferreira is currently pursuing her PhD under the supervision of Ricardo Salgado (EST-IPS), with co-supervision by Mário Diniz (UCIBIO, Caparica) and Ana Rita Duarte (LAQV).
