03-12-2013

The "Falling Walls" conference, which began during the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall fall , has worked as an international showcase for world leaders in politics , economics , arts, social sciences and science. In 2013, Portugal was invited to attend this conference for the first time, due to research work made at FCT - UNL in the field of transparent electronics and electronic paper. The theme of the speech of Professor Elvira Fortunato last 9 November was "Breaking the wall to the new age of electronics”. Transparent electronics has had worldwide success in the area of flat dials, which have involved known brands like Samsung and LG.  This activity area was followed by the invention of the transistor paper. In continuation of the oxide and paper applications the inorganic electronic transistor was invented and patented in the United States. This has had an important role in the democratization of the diagnostic testing of tuberculosis, glucose, thus avoiding that these tests can be only used in certain areas of the world.
