Postgraduate scholarship / QREN Project on Public Transportation Planning

04-04-2014

One Postgraduate scholarship is opened under the " Restrict to Plan " (Ref: 34091) project of which is a partner the Faculty of Science and Technology, New University Lisbon (Centre for Artificial Intelligence ), financed by the European Regional Development Fund - FEDER , through COMPETE - Operational Programme for Competitiveness Factors (POFC) under the following conditions:

The purpose of this project is the development of a new planning tool for the passenger transportation sector, fully automated and which can integrate the information services, vehicles, and not least, the scheduling of staff, both at the planning stage and at the stage of risk management.

For this purpose the candidate will join the FCT team that will develop the module for planning and optimization of resources (vehicles and crews) that should meet the desired quality of service, exploring Constraint Programming techniques.

In particular , the candidate will develop the vehicle management component , with the objective of obtaining coverage by existing vehicles of several "transport lines" agreed with a transport authority for a given region / county vehicles .

This coverage should take into account that the frequency (hours) of the lines varies throughout the day (e.g. rush hours), week (weekdays and weekends ) and year (summer and winter schedules), as well as the restrictions imposed by the limited number of vehicles and their characteristics and adaptation to certain routes.

The technology used will be based on a constraint solver already developed (Casper), which should be supplemented by Constraint-Based Local Search methods.

The prospective candidate should have a Degree or Masters in Computer Science being provided preferably your knowledge in the sub-area of Constraint Programming.

The work will be developed in CENTRIA - Center for Artificial Intelligence , Faculty of Science and Technology, New University of Lisbon (Department of Informatics), under the scientific guidance of Professor Pedro Barahona .

The grant will have a duration of 12 months, and is due to start in May 2014. The grant may be renewed up to a maximum of 36 months.

The scholarship amounts to €980 or €745 €, depending on the degree of the candidate (respectively an MSc or a BSc), in accordance with the grants awarded directly by the FCT ( http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores ).

The candidate will be selected for Academic Assessment and Interview with a rating of 50 % in each of the criteria .

Applications must be formalized by sending a letter of application accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae and certified qualifications (if obtained outside the Faculty of Science and Technology).

Applications must be submitted during the period from 9:00 to 17:00 at the Department of Informatics, Faculty of Science and Technology, New University of Lisbon, or sent by email to Professor Pedro Barahona (pb@fct.unl.pt).
