The Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS research center in Porto is supporting the development of an ocular fund observation technology, whose purpose is to assist in the diagnosis of ophthalmological diseases.

David Melo, a finalist at FCT NOVA, has developed the "EyeFundusScope", a device that incorporates a "portable and simple-to-use" technology that works as if it were a photographic camera and enables observation and the identification of structures present in the ocular fundus (retina, blood vessels, optic disc). This device has been developed within the scope of the project of this final student student of the Integrated Master of Biomedical Engineering of FCT NOVA.

This technology has as its main objective to aid in the diagnosis of ophthalmological diseases, unfortunately very frequent, such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, which affect many people who do not know what they actually have.
