Inês Jorge and Tiago Martins, 2nd year students of the FCT NOVA Integrated Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Nelson Rebelo, 2nd year student of the Integrated Master in Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering at FCT NOVA, and Diogo Repas, a student of the second year of IST, won the first place in the national competition TecStorm'19 with the project "Not so Trashy".

The team went home with 2000 euros and laptops, after participating in a hackton for 28 consecutive hours in which they had to develop an embryonic idea for a startup.

The idea that earned the prize was based on optimizing the process of solid urban waste collection. The proposal presented suggested intelligent containers, capable of making the filling level available in real time. The information would be directly sent to a central server allowing to optimize the collection routes.

TecStorm, promoted by Junitec and with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Vodafone and Ciência Viva, is a marathon for students of higher education, which links technology to entrepreneurship and whose main mission is the development of ideas capable of generating impact on society.
