NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA) won the 2nd place in the Separa e Ganha (Sort and Win) competition promoted by Amarsul. The results were announced on July 5.

The participation in this competition allowed several packaging waste bag holders to be installed throughout Caparica's campus in December 2018. This simple measure helped improve community behavior by reducing the number of packages in the undifferentiated garbage containers by 17%.

In the same scope, the ECO.FCT application was created. This application guides the user to the nearest ecopoint and even offered prizes to its users. Catarina Paulo was the user with more points gathered by recycling well, with a total of 245 points. "The ECO.FCT contest was an excellent initiative that promoted a more sustainable behavior allowing to expand the knowledge about selective deposition in a playful way," said the winner.

Another important initiative was the collection of waste at the Caparica campus, organized by the NuBioq (the biochemistry student group), which took place on June 9th. The route began at the Departmental Building and ended at the maintenance circuit of the Frausto da Silva University Residence. For two and a half hours, the group of volunteers collected the most diverse trash from the floor. "In fact what surprised us the most was the amount of cigarette butts collected. In addition, we also collected water bottles, yoghurts and milk packages, some plastic bags, etc. We also found some paper and cardboard," they explain.

NOVA School of Science and Technology is committed to increasing the recycling rate and these initial results show a community willing to contribute to this cause. These initiatives demonstrate that the community is aware of current issues and reinforce the School's efforts to raise awareness and encourage more environmentally friendly behaviors.
