International Day of Mathematics

Cancellation

The International Mathematics Day celebrations were canceled following the contingency measures adopted by NOVA to prevent the spread of the disease by COVID-19.

The NOVA School of Science and Technology joins the celebrations of the International Day of Mathematics (DIM), with lectures, games, competitions, exhibitions and workshops dedicated to Mathematics.

The UNESCO General Assembly proclaimed, in November 2019, 14 March as the International Day of Mathematics (DIM) and, in 2020, we will have its first official celebration under the theme “Mathematics is everywhere”.

In the afternoons of March 13th and 14th, the Caparica campus will be full of mathematics activities. The public is invited to come to know more about this fascinating area, such as exploring a statistical method for calculating the number π ("Buffon Needles"), or conducting an experiment involving a model on the scale of the Sun and Earth ("Sol à Escala"), or attend a lecture on the relationship between Mathematics and Music. These are just some of the proposals for these days, and the rest of the schedule can be consulted here.

The activities of the first day (Friday) are especially aimed at secondary schools, and those of the second day (Saturday) are aimed at the general population. All activities are suitable for every age and are free to enter, with the exception of workshops.

The celebration of International Mathematics Day is being led by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) with the support of numerous regional and international organizations. Fabio Chalub, president of the Department of Mathematics at FCT NOVA, is one of the eigth members of the DIM Management Committee for the 2019/20 period.
