The Consortium of Engineering Schools  (CEE) – which brings together the counterparts of the universities of Minho (EEUM), Porto (FEUP), Aveiro (UA), Coimbra (FCTUC), Lisbon (Técnico-UL), and the NOVA School of Science and Technology – will have during the 2022/24 biennium, the executive direction of Pedro Arezes, president of the EEUM. The new person in charge succeeds the FEUP counterpart, João Falcão e Cunha. The decision was taken last Friday, during a consortium meeting in Coimbra.

The meeting also addressed the larger projects underway, namely the protocol with the Foundation for Science and Technology for twenty annual doctoral grants within the scope of the UNESCO Science LP Center, the short-term launch of an open and massive online course (MOCC) in Information Systems and Software Engineering and, furthermore, the recent agreement with idD – Portugal Defense and its Aeronautical Academy of Portugal, which will include the CEE among the partners.

In view of these projects and the “high commitment” of all the participants in the CEE, Pedro Arezes considers that the expectations for this biennium are very promising. "It is in this forum between the Schools that we will find comprehensive and balanced solutions for the promotion of training and not least, research and innovation in the various areas of engineering," he says. "It is moreover in sharing and in the search for a common understanding, despite the differences between the members of the consortium, that the response that the Schools offer to the challenges will be more balanced and considered. I hope, therefore, that the consortium can remain dynamic and attentive to the challenges we face, actively promoting engineering in the country and abroad," he adds.

The CEE was created in July 2019 and integrates six of the main Portuguese Engineering Schools, promoting joint activities on higher education, research and innovation in engineering in Portugal, in Portuguese-speaking countries and in other territories of the world, thus contributing to the progress of engineering and for the national and international recognition of Portuguese engineering. The official website is www.cee.pt.

Pedro Arezes holds a Ph.D. in Production and Systems Engineering and has developed post-doctoral work at TU Delft (Holland), MIT and Harvard University (both in the USA). The full professor and president of the EEUM coordinates the Ergonomics and Human Factors group at "Centro Algoritmi" and is additionally the director of the MIT Portugal Program.
